Crescents in March 2012

Version 23.3.2012 Martin Elsaesser, www.mondatlas.de

Young crescent on 23. March

The young crescent was observed from home. I started in the afternoon, after some of the strong haze had vanished. The videosystem immediately showed the crescent at about 11.5° elongation, but i could not see it visually at first. Only 15minutes before local sunset could i spot the crescent in a small telescope at 17x. After sunset, things got better and the crescent could finally be seen with the naked eye.

Old crescent on 21. March

The old crescent was observed in the morning of 21. march, from a location east of munich. Despite some haze the wide crescent could be seen with the naked eye. With 8x30 binoculars it was a beautifull sight.
